The latest move came after 13 miners were killed in that region in less than a month.

Labor and Social Welfare Secretary Rosalinda Velez announced the suspension of work at 32 mines in the northern state of Coahuila, citing violations of safety regulations.

Velez said that the economy portfolio and her secretariat will work jointly on revoking licenses at mines where serious violations of regulations have been found.

The measure by the government permanently shutters 14 mines and temporarily closes 18 others, according to Fox News Latino.

Since March 2009, over 1,000 inspections have been carried out at Mexican coal mines, including 282 thus far this year, Velez noted.

Mining accounts for 4.9% of the country’s gross domestic product and is the nation’s fourth-leading source of foreign currency.
