The system, which is slated for completion in the fourth quarter of 2016, will capture CO2 from flue gas from an existing coal-fired power generation plant.

NRG Energy and JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration are promoting the EOR project, which includes the separation and capture of CO2 from flue gas emitted from Unit 8 of NRG’s WA Parish generation station.

The Parish coal-fired power generation plant is situated about 60km southwest of Houston, Texas.

The project also includes the injection of CO2 into nearby West Ranch oil field to increase crude oil production.

The CO2 capture system will feature a flue-gas quencher, absorber and regeneration system, CO2 compression unit, and utility facilities.

Petra Nova CCS I is a special purpose company of NRG and one of the firms implementing the project, through Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America (MHIA).

MHI said it will license CO2 capture technology to Petra Nova CCS I through MHIA, whose consortium partner is TIC – The Industrial Company.

The MHIA/TIC consortium will be responsible for engineering, procurement and construction of the CO2 capture system and its facilities.
