The offshore wind turbines will be supplied to Skovgaard Invest and Energicenter Nord under a conditional agreement, which will enable the second phase testing of the 0-series V164’s development to start.

Installation of the turbines is expected to take place from mid-2015 and the deal includes a 20-year service agreement, with the first five years being used for testing.

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind CEO Jens Tommerup said the order for the first V164-8.0 MW turbines is a crucial step in the ramp up towards serial production.

"We will verify the performance, reliability and efficiency of the wind turbine before taking it offshore," Tommerup added.

Skovgaard Invest and Energy Center North plan to sell 75% of the rights to the test project to local investors and other community members.

Vestas developed the V164 offshore machine, which is now part of the joint venture with Japan-based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

The first V164 8MW prototype is already in place at the Danish National test centre in Østerild.

In February 2014, Dong Energy has selected the V164 turbine for its 258MW extension of the Burbo Bank offshore project in the UK.
