The contracts have been awarded by Nakoso IGCC Power GK and Hirono IGCC Power GK.

Comprising Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Environmental Solutions, the consortium will construct two IGCC plants in the Fukushima Prefecture to help promote local industrial recovery.

The two power plants, each with a generating capacity of 540MW, are planned to be commissioned in September 2020 and September 2021, respectively.

For Nakoso IGCC Power GK, the consortium will built the new IGCC on property adjacent to Joban Joint Power’s Nakoso Power Station in Iwaki City.

The consortium will also build a IGCC power plant for Hirono IGCC Power GK on the site of TEPCO Fuel & Power’s Hirono Thermal Power Station in Fukushima's Futaba District.

Incorporating locally developed technologies, the MHPS' IGCC systems generate power using a high-efficiency combined-cycle format, incorporating gas and steam turbines.

The system has significantly higher power generation efficiency compared to conventional coal-fired thermal plants, and CO2 emissions are 15% lower.

Nakoso IGCC Power GK was established with capital from Mitsubishi Corporation Power, MHI, Mitsubishi Electric, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and Joban Joint Power.

Additionally, Hirono IGCC Power GK was launched with capital from Mitsubishi Corporation Power, MHI, Mitsubishi Electric, and Tokyo Electric Power.

In 2014, TEPCO contracted MHPS led consortium to construct two 500MW class IGCC plants in the Fukushima Prefecture.

The first IGCC plant was planned for construction at TEPCO's Hirono power station in Futaba-gun, while the second at the Joban joint power-operated Nakoso power plant in Iwaki City.
