The cogeneration facility will capture waste heat from the coke plant, convert it to steam, and then utilize that steam to generate electricity through a single turbine generator.

The cogeneration plant will connect to the regional electric grid through two existing transmission lines.

As per the company, the cogeneration station will provide eight highly paid, skilled jobs in addition to 67 positions at the coke plant.

On June 6, 2008, Middletown Coke filed its application for a certificate of environmental compatibility and public need to construct the cogeneration facility.

On October 30, 2008, Middletown Coke and the Ohio Power Siting Board staff filed an agreement that settled concerns raised in the staff’s report. The agreement, approved by the board, authorizes construction of the plant subject to 12 conditions that the company must meet to remedy the environmental and economic impacts presented by the project.
