The grants are provided from the Low-income and Energy Efficiency Fund, designed to provide resources for the efficient use of energy by all customer classes.
A major portion of the grant will go to the Department of Human Services that will get $35m to supplement the energy crisis portion of the State Emergency Relief program and will provide direct assistance with energy bills and shut-off protection for low-income households statewide.
The other organizations receiving the fund include Downriver Community Conference, Lighthouse Emergency Services, Michigan Community Action Agency Association, Newaygo County Community Services, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the Heat and Warmth Fund and the Salvation Army.
MPSC chairman Orjiakor Isiogu said that the grants awarded today will provide much-needed assistance for low-income customers with their energy bills just with approach of the heating months.
