Located about three miles southwest of Pella, Iowa, the Red Rock Dam is operated by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Earlier this year, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission granted a license for the Red Rock hydroelectric facilities to CRD Hydroelectric, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nelson Energy.

The Red Rock hydroelectric project (RRHP) has now been acquired by Western Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (WMMPA) from Nelson Energy.

This power project will be financed and owned by WMMPA and constructed and operated by MRES.

MRES director of power supply and operations Ray Wahle said the design capacity of RRHP will be about 36MW, but the project will have a capacity of up to 55MW at certain times of the year when water is plentiful.

Construction of RRHP is expected to begin in 2013 with the project becoming operational by early 2016.
