The agreement expands and consolidates the partnership that already exists between the companies in the field of emergency power generation in NPPs. Westinghouse Electric Germany is to give preference to Tognum-Group company MTU Friedrichshafen on projects in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
On all its projects for new construction or repair of NPPs in these regions, Westinghouse Electric Germany is to assess in advance whether cooperation would be feasible, whereby it will act as general contractor for construction or modernization and call on the expertise of MTU Friedrichshafen in the field of emergency power. The cooperation contract shall initially apply for five years.
The two companies have joined forces on modernization of the Beznau nuclear power plant in the Swiss canton of Aargau. From 2014, four gensets will be responsible for emergency power in two blocks of the plant. These comply with the stringent requirements of the German Nuclear Safety Standards Commission for the operation of emergency diesel generators in NPPs. The gensets are based on MTU 12V 956 TB33 engines and together generate 18,000kVA.
