West Virginia Office of Miner’s Health, Safety & Training was quoted by WTRF-TV as saying initial reports indicated a fall of roof and rib on the longwall face led to the accident.

"Three miners were involved. Forty-five-year-old Assistant Longwall Coordinator John M. Garloch was fatally injured, and two other miners were injured and transported to local hospitals for treatment."

Of the two hospitalized miners, one of them has been discharged and the other is being treated.

According to the US Department of Labor, there were 16 coal mining deaths across the country in 2014, reported Reuters.

The death at Marshall County coal mine incident in West Virginia is the first fatality this year.
