nuclear sites

The contract marks a major step in decommissioning Europe’s deepest nuclear waste-fill project.

M+W Group UK managing director Spencer Baber said: "We are looking forward to applying our design, decommissioning and complex projects delivery expertise in this unique environment."

The 65m Shaft and Silo underground sites have been in use for the past 40 years to store intermediate level waste.

Under the seven-year contract, M+W Group will be responsible for design, safety, construction management, and environment case development for decommissioning the two facilities and restoring the Dounreay site.

M+W Group will partner with Oxford Technologies, 3T Safety Consultants and Sanderson Watts Associates to manage the project.

The decommissioning project includes construction of new retrieval, processing and packaging facilities to treat the shaft and silo waste safely and securely.

DSRL Shaft and Silo decommissioning project director Mike Gearhart said: "The design and safety case production are key deliverables for our external stakeholders to ensure we are proceeding safely to reduce the risk posed by the nuclear material currently consigned to the Shaft and Silo."
