Companies from China and Thailand are surveying possible sites for the construction of Myanmar’s first wind farms.

China’s Three Gorges Co and Gunkul Engineering Public Co of Thailand have each signed agreements with the Myanmar government to launch wind power projects in nine locations.

The surveying phase could take up to one year but construction of the first projects could begin in 2014, according to the Ministry of Electric Power. Three Gorges Co is aiming to build 1102 MW of capacity and Gunkul Engineering 2930 MW.

The first projects could come on-line in 2015.

The companies are carrying out wind surveys in the regions of Chin, Rakhine, Ayeyarwady, Yangon, Monm Kayin, Shan, Kayah and Tanintharyi.
