The museum is seeking donations and individuals to assist with the development of the garden, which would soon have a garden centre piece, reported BBC.

Museum representative Katherine Morley remarked that the museum exists to educate the future generations about coal mining.

"Working in it is a very dangerous activity," Morley added.

Wakefield Labour MP Mary Creagh told BBC that the museum will naturally complement the garden, where visitors can remember all the miners who were killed underground.

Creagh also emphasized the ‘crippling’ lung diseases and various industrial diseases that affect coal miners.

Barnsley Central Labour MP Dan Jarvis commented at the launch, "The community spirit in the former minefield areas is amongst the strongest I have ever known."

The memorial is planned for opening between July-September of 2014.
