A new 400MW pumped storage facility in Scotland has been given the green light by the country’s government.
Scottish Ministers today granted approval for the construction and operation of the Glenmuckloch pumped storage station in Dumfries and Galloway – a site which is currently operated as a surface coal mine.
“The Scottish Government believes there is a huge opportunity around pumped storage hydro,” said Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Jobs and Fair Work Keith Brown. “This tried and tested technology can support peak demand and effectively store greater levels of electricity at times when renewable energy output is high but demand is low.”
The project is expected to employ around 327 workers in its construction phase and create up to 15 permanent jobs.
