Started in 2006, the $11m project involved complete rebuilding and upgrade of the Bonavista Peninsula’s secondary transmission line.

Executed in several phases, the multi-year project witnessed replacement of a total of 100km of transmission line to facilitate reliable electricity service to the nearly 10,000 customers.

Located between the towns of Clarenville and Catalina, the new transmission line can serve as a backup to the primary line in the case of electricity system damage due to the severe weather.

Newfoundland Power Customer Operations and Engineering vice president Gary Smith said the investment in the Bonavista Peninsula electricity system has increased the strength and ability of its transmission lines and will provide increased reliability for customers.

”Investing in our electricity system is critical to our ability to provide our customers with safe, reliable, least-cost service,” Smith added.

The Bonavista Peninsula’s high-capacity primary transmission line is well maintained line and has been partially rebuilt over the years.
