In its statement, the commission said, "We are satisfied that the development of the Correnso Underground Mine will, subject to appropriate condition enable people and communities to provide for their social, economic and cultural wellbeing."
Commenting on the approval, Newmont Waihi Gold general manager Glen Grindlay advised that the approval should be taken in line with company’s feasibility assessment.
‘We anticipate that some objectors may wish to appeal the decision or seek alternative conditions through the Environment Court, and it is highly likely that we will also lodge an appeal to address some conditions," added Grindlay.
The company has scheduled the construction of the mine in mid-2013 and it plans to operate until the end of 2020.
