First Solar designed, developed and constructed the project using its advanced thin film PV modules, while NextEra Energy Resources’ Canadian subsidiary and NextEra Energy Canada owned and operated the plants.

The two projects began commercial operation in February 2012 and provide enough power to serve about 6,440 homes.

Each year the solar generation is expected to help avoid nearly 45,000 tons of carbon dioxide.

The Ontario Power Authority is purchasing the power generated by solar projects through long-term contracts under its Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program.

First Solar Canada Business Development vice president Peter Carrie said the projects employed 800 construction workers, including local First Nations workers, and are the first large-scale solar facilities permitted under the Province’s Renewable Energy Approval process.
