A thermal electric power generation facility will be built on the Hibarino site, which is owned by Nippon Paper’s Ishinomaki Mill.

The facility will generate 149MW of energy using coal and woody biomass. The output will be sold to a power producer and supplier.

Nippon Paper has stopped operations at the Ishinomaki mill in 2011 after the tsunami that followed the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The faciliy was restored by the end of August 2012.

Nippon Paper is considering transformation of its existing structure into a worldwide biomass business.

Plans include expansion of the company’s energy business by using locational advantages of its mills and techniques in operating power generation facilities.

Apart from paper business, the Ishinomaki Mill is also engaged in the recycling.
