The state government has earmarked EUR1.5bn for the refinery project in the state adding that the ground breaking ceremony has been fixed for August 2010.

The government said the refinery, if established, would curb the bridging of petroleum products to the state and other neighboring states.

Mr Austen Oniwon, group managing director of NNPC, said that the refinery proposal by the Zamfara State Government was in line with the firm’s vision to establish more refineries across the country to augment petroleum products supply and distribution to the people.

The company said that it is producing 2.2 million barrels of crude per day in all its operations.

Mr Oniwon said that the production of crude oil has rebound with the amnesty and post amnesty policy of the Federal Government and also that all the refineries are running at the moment.
