The Netherland-based multinational oil and gas company Royal Dutch Shell has spud the well on 29 December 2012.

The well is being drilled to test the Priodontes prospect and gather more geological information to better investigate the potential of the area as a new offshore oil province.

Northern Petroleum managing director Derek Musgrove said the well is drilled to evaluate the potential of offshore of Guyane as a new oil province.

"The joint venture with Shell, Total, Tullow and Wessex is continuing upon its vigorous follow up of the successful GM-ES-1 discovery in late 2011," Musgrove added.

Shell is the operator of the offshore exploration license Guyane Maritime with a 45% interest, while Tullow Oil owns 27.5%. Total has 25% interest, and Northern Petroleum and Wessex Exploration each have 1.25% interest.
