Approximately NOK29m ($5m) has already been granted by Norway for the project preparation following an agreement signed in July 2014 by the Royal Norwegian Embassy and the Tanzanian Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, reported AllAfrica.com.

Located in Hai district, Kilimanjaro region, the power station was operated by the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) but was handed over to the Arusha Technical College (ATC) in 2014, the publication reported.

The project manager/coordinator Daniel Ngoma said in an interview: "The project will have two components; establishing a training centre for hydro electricity and reconstruction of the power station.

"Norway has advanced in hydro electricity projects. We want them to work with our experts in capacity building.
Arusha Technical College principal Dr Richard Masika earlier said that the Kikuletwa hydro power station rehabilitation work could cost up to $30m.

"Production of one MW needed between $ 1.8million to $2.4m. This means we will need more than $ 20m or even up to $ 30m to revive the station with the capacity of producing 17 MW."
