The company plans to drill the well from semi-submersible Transocean Spitsbergen about 22km west of Aasta Hansteen gas field.

This is the second well to be drilled under the PL602, which was awarded to Statoil in May 2011 in the 21st licensing round on the Norwegian shelf.

Work will begin after completion of drilling of wildcat wells 6407/8-7 and 6407/8-7 A in production license 348C.

The wells are being drilled 4km north of the Hyme field in the southern part of the Norwegian Sea and 140km north of Kristiansund.

Statoil Petroleum operates the license 602 with 30% stake while other licensees include Centrica Resources (20%), Petoro (20%), Rocksources Exploration Norway (10%), Wintershall Norge (10%) and Atlantic Petroleum Norge (10%).

The license area comprises part of block 6706/10, block 6706/11 and part of block 6706/12.

The company is required to secure other permits and consents before starting the drilling activity.
