Located on a 104-acre site in the Halifax County Industrial Park in Southern Virginia, the around $170m plant will generate up to 49.9MW of renewable electricity using waste wood leftover from logging operations as fuel.

NOVI Energy is responsible for the construction of the plant, which NOVEC owns the plant, which has now been connected to the PJM regional electric transmission grid on 11 September 2013.

The project has created 500 construction jobs and is expected to create 26 full-time jobs once the plant becomes operational, boosting the Southside Virginia economy.

Pre-commercial-operation testing and inspection of plant systems are likely to continue for few more weeks.

NOVEC vice president of energy and business development Mike Dailey said that the company has been working on the project for three years and has now connected to the grid.

"This successful synchronization with the power grid marks a major milestone in the development of the station and now sets the stage for commercial operation," added Dailey.
