Southern Co will construct the new AP1000 reactors at its existing Vogtle site, adjacent to the company’s existing reactors about 26 miles southeast of Augusta, Georgia.

The new 1,100MW nuclear units are expected to commence operations as soon as 2016 and 2017.

Southern Nuclear, a unit of Southern Co, is overseeing the construction and will operate the new units for Georgia Power and co-owners Oglethorpe Power Corp, the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and Dalton Utilities.

Southern Co subsidiary Georgia Power owns 45.7% of the new power units, with a certified cost of $6.1bn.
