Under their recently awarded 20-year contracts, the energy firms will install a 25.6MW behind-the-meter energy storage solution for Southern California Edison, a subsidiary of Edison International.

Ice Energy’s Ice Bear technology will be used for the project. The distributed energy storage solution that works in conjunction with commercial direct-expansion air-conditioning systems.

The companies will deploy about 1,800 Ice Bear units in Orange County in early 2016 after final approval from the California Public Utilities Commission.

The units will be attached to 5-20 ton rooftop commercial AC units. Each unit can lower harmful CO2 emissions by about four tons a year.

Ice Energy CEO Mike Hopkins said: "Energy storage, particularly the distributed and efficient storage capacity provided by our Ice Bears, reduces reliance on fossil fuels and helps better integrate renewable energy sources into a smarter electric grid."

NRG Energy West Region president John Chillemi said: "We look forward to combining our experience in delivering customer-driven clean energy solutions with Ice Energy and their innovative technology to provide clean and reliable distributed energy storage products to this bellwether state."

The latest agreement will bring NRG’s commitment to California’s preferred resources market to more than 200MW.
