“Nova Scotia is rich in natural resources that can provide energy. We plan to identify small producers and their projects in all areas of renewable energy,” said Rob Bennett, president and chief executive officer of NSPI. “In particular, the goal is to enable community wind projects and provide more opportunity for companies in the forestry sector.”

Biomass is a renewable fuel source. Already, many firms supply surplus biomass-generated electricity to NSPI. Presently, above 40 wind turbines with a capacity of 60 MW of installed generation provide power to its customers.

“Nova Scotia Power is committed to increasing the amount of electricity from renewable sources,” stated Bennett. “The potential is there, and we all have the same goal of increasing the amount of energy from renewable sources.”

Since 2003, NSPI has entered agreements with independent power producers for above 300 MW of electricity from renewable sources. Most of those agreements are for energy generated by wind. Those agreements also include landfill gas and biomass.
