The move follows an expression of interest (EOI) process, and two years after the government lifted 26-year uranium exploration ban in the region.

Minister for Resources and Energy Anthony Roberts said the EOI process involved the division of resources and energy (DRE) analyzing the applicants’ environmental performance, technical expertise and financial capacity.

"Exploration will allow the NSW Government to better understand the extent of the State’s resources and any potential economic benefits," Roberts added.

The six companies being invited include Australian Zirconia, Callabonna Resources and HNFL Holdings, EJ Resources, Hartz Rare Earths, Iluka Resources and Marmota Energy.

Roberts said: "Companies that apply for and are granted an exploration licence will only be allowed to perform low impact exploration and environmental monitoring, any other activities will require further approvals.

"Australia has the largest deposits of uranium globally with 33 per cent of the world’s reasonably assured resources and is the world’s third largest producer of uranium concentrates behind Kazakhstan and Canada."
