The utility said that power generated from this unit will be supplied to the Commonwealth Games, being held in New Delhi in October this year. This is the second unit of the Stage II of a coal-based project at Dadri. The commercial operation of the first 490MW unit started early this year. Both the units will supply 90% of their output for the Games and the remaining 10% to UP.

According to NTPC, the Dadri project includes a coal-based project consisting of stage I (840MW) and stage II (490MWX2), a 829MW gas-based station, and a 1,500MW HVDC converter station, in addition to a switchyard with a power handling capacity of 4,500MW.

NTPC operates 27 power stations across the country. With a current generating capacity of approximately 30,644MW, the utility has embarked on plans to increase its capacity to 75,000MW by 2017.
