The central government of India is considering setting up the thermal power station at Khambat in Gujarat’s Anand district and the state government of Gujarat is yet to respond for the project.

Business Standard quoted Saurabh Patel, minister of state for energy and petrochemicals, as saying: “We accept NTPC’s proposal but it would be beneficial to the state if the company decides to use domestic coal instead of imported coal.”

Separately, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between NTPC and Gujarat Power Corporation (GPCL) for development of 500MW renewable energy based projects, preferably wind and solar energy. Under the agreement, the Gujarat government is expected to purchase the power produced from the projects.

With a current generating capacity of approximately 30,644MW, NTPC has embarked on plans to become a 75,000MW company by 2017.
