Reuters cited state-owned Rural Areas Electricity Co (RAEC) as saying in a statement that 50MW wind farm, which will enter service in early 2017, can generate electricity to meet about 50% of demand in the governorate during the winter.

The country, which has limited oil reserves, is exploring potential use of renewable energy to address the growing demand for electricity as the large industrial projects are being initiated.

Coordinated by Abu Dhabi Future Energy (Masdar) and funded by the Government of Abu Dhabi, the project will feature turbines manufactured by an overseas firm in the West, RAEC officials said.

Local contractors will be provided a large share of the project construction work.

In 2015, RAEC is planning to launch seven more renewable energy projects, which include $7.8m worth five solar energy projects, and two wind power plants.

RAEC intends to provide cost effective electricity to all premises in remote areas in Oman.
