The RFP for wind projects was floated along with those for the development of 140MW of solar, 50MW of bioenergy and 75MW of waterpower projects, totaling 565MW.

This is the first of three RFPs under Ontario’s Large Renewable Procurement (LRP) competitive process which supports Ontario’s effort to generate 10.7GW of non-hydro renewable energy capacity by 2021.

The potential bidders need to submit their proposals by 1 September following which the corporation will select the final contractor by the end of this year.-

The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) played an active role in the LRP consultation process.

CanWEA president Robert Hornung said: "Ontario’s new competitive bidding process has attracted high quality project applicants who were pre-qualified through the LRP I RFQ process based on mandatory requirements focused on past development experience and financial capability.

"Effective community engagement is fundamental to the success of wind energy projects and the wind industry values the right of individuals to have an important role in discussions about developments in their community."

Ontario has more than 3,590MW of installed capacity for clean energy, which accounts for 3.5% of the province’s total electricity demand.
