The report said that Portlands combined cycle plant consists of two 175MW combustion turbines and one 200MW steam turbine. The plant, which is located in Toronto, entered commercial service in 2009. Natural gas is used by the combined-cycle technology to turn combustion turbines to generate power.

In 2006, OPG and TransCanada started building the plant and the combustion turbines operated during the summer of 2008 before shutting for several months in September 2008 to enable workers to hook up the combined-cycle part of the plant, reported Reuters.

OPG focuses on production and sale of electricity from its generation assets. The company owns and operates more than 22,000MW of generating capacity and markets electricity to utilities in Ontario and neighbouring US and Canadian electricity markets.
