Water Power Development Authority of Pakistan (WAPDA) general manager of planning Dr. Siddique said the proposed dam would have a barrage capacity of 10 million cusec and storage capacity of the project 1.29 million acre-feet (MAF). Total length of the dykes will be around 44 miles and their height would be 39 feet.

The environmental and rehabilitation cost of the Chiniot Dam Project has been estimated at PKR5.2 billion and PKR5.1 billion will be invested for the construction of the power house.

Senior Minister Raja Riaz Ahmad was told the construction of the dam would result in the availability of water valued at PKR2.92 billion and hydro electricity worth PKR0.92 billion.

Irrigation department experts say that the flood protection embankment up to Pindi Bhattian would be fortified.

WAPDA has contacted the federal government about building the Mangla and Marala Link Canal Project.

Further feasibility studies of the project will be conducted by WAPDA. A similar Mid Ranjha Storage Project will also be undertaken by WAPDA.

Ahmad says that the government of Pakistan wanted to bild a storage dam on Chenab river at Marala in Sialkot in order to save Chenab river water for irrigation use.

Ahmad also said the irrigation department was implementing a comprehensive strategy aimed at maintenance and improvement of colossal canal assets and to set up new hydel and hydro power projects at canal and barrage sites.
