The US-based natural gas and electricity utility has verified the safe operating pressure of natural gas transmission pipeline in 2012, by conducting hydrostatic pressure testing and rigorous records validation.

Hydrostatic pressure testing is one of the measures undertaken by the company to improve and further strengthen its natural gas system.

Ever since the launch of the PSEP in 2011, the company has tested and verified about 658.2km of gas transmission pipelines.

PG&E Gas Operations executive VP Nick Stavropoulos stated, "There is nothing more important than working to make our natural gas system safer in the communities we serve. We’ve made tremendous progress, but the work we’ve done is just the beginning."

The utility has also begun setting up a gas control center at its new Gas Operations headquarters at Bishop Ranch in San Ramon, California.

The center is expected to help the firm better monitor the safe and reliable operation of its 10,782.6km of transmission pipeline and 67,592.4km of smaller-diameter distribution mains.

Construction of the gas control centre is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2013.
