The news source reported that Poland, which sources around 90% of its electricity from coal-based sources, wants power companies to be issued free CO2 permits for longer to contain electricity price increases.

Poland fears that EU plans to make it mandatory for power generators to pay for CO2 permits, by 2013, would push up electricity prices by 50% to 70%.

Mr Dimas said that the disagreement between western and eastern European states will not hamper the EU’s Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) and a deal is expected to be clinched by 2008 year-end, reported Reuters.

Mr Dimas, as quoted by the news source, said: We do not agree with their calculations. There could be a 10% to 15% increase in prices, and this is over a period of time.
