Located in Luzerne County about seven miles north of Berwick, the Susquehanna plant is operated by PPL Susquehanna and is owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna and Allegheny Electric.

During the refueling and maintenance outage, the company will replace about 40% of the uranium fuel of the reactor, which is shutdown, and complete a number of equipment maintenance tasks and upgrades.

The plant will be upgraded with advanced technology while the workers will carry out thousands of routine maintenance tasks to maintain the plant in good condition.

The maintenance outages are performed by the company annually at this time, when seasonal temperatures bring less electricity use and the demand on the regional power grid is lower.

PPL carries out refueling and maintenance of each of the two units at the Susquehanna plant for every 24 months.
Currently, Unit 1 of the power plant is operating at full power.
