Efforts by German opposition leader and likely next Chancellor Angela Merkel to strike a deal with nuclear generators over prices have run aground.

The CDU party chair wants generators to sign a contract with nuclear plant operators to ensure they will cut power prices in return for plant life extensions. However, the country’s large generators have apparently rejected the proposal with an un-named spokesman quoted as saying: “If you have decided to have a free electricity market, then the chancellery cannot call for price reductions.”
