During peak demand scenarios, like hot summer afternoons or cold winter mornings, the unit generates the required power. The Wayne County facility commenced operations in 2000. It is located near the company’s 474 megawatt Lee Plant which comprises three coal-fired units.

Lloyd Yates, president and CEO of Progress Energy Carolinas, in a written statement informed that the additional capacity generated from the unit is a critical part in meeting the future power needs.

“Summer typically brings the highest peak demand for electricity, and we’re ready for whatever Mother Nature brings,” Lloyd Yates added.
