Mines Minister Andrew Cripps said: "More jobs are now being created in Queensland than in any other state and the return of uranium mining will help ensure we remain Australia’s jobs powerhouse for the long term.

"Each new uranium project has the potential to create a large number of construction and operational jobs."

The government also revealed plans to restart the abandoned Mary Kathleen Mine near Mount Isa. The mine was closed in 1982, and is said to host significant deposits of rare earth elements.

The Queensland Coordinator-General will assess the applications for uranium mining projects through the State Development and Public Works Organisation; environmental assessments and project approvals will be jointly carried out by the Queensland and Commonwealth Governments.

Uranium will be exported through licensed ports in Darwin and South Australia to countries that have a bilateral safeguard arrangement with Australia.
