On 5 May, the plant, which is owned and operated by New Orleans-based energy firm Entergy, stopped nuclear operations at the plant, following the water tank exceeded its site threshold and leaked.

Authorities said that about 79 gallons of ‘slightly radioactive water’ spilled from the Palisades plant into Lake Michigan as a result of the half-inch-long crack, reported PressTV.

The leakage originated from a 300,000-gallon tank, which injects large amounts of cool, borated water into the reactor coolant system.

Entergy has spent about a week and a half to locate the source of the leak.

Authorities have confirmed that the water spilled into Lake Michigan was radioactive, however, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said that it poses no environmental threat since it was diluted.
