The plant has been upgraded with $19.3m assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as part of the US government’s commitment to strengthening public-owned power sector entities, The Nation reports.

Olson said the Jamshoro represents one example of how the US and Pakistan continue to partner to help Pakistan grow and address its energy requirements.

"Together, we are responding to Pakistan’s energy crisis. And we are working together to develop a partnership that delivers for the people of Pakistan and beyond," Olson added.

Commencing in June 2010, the upgrade work restored 150MW of power generating capacity lost by the plant due to deferred maintenance and reduced fuel efficiency.

Exceeding project targets, the repairs added a total of 270MW of power to Pakistan’s national electrical grid, which is sufficient to provide electricity to around 4.3 million more citizens.

USAID is supporting the rehabilitation of Muzaffargarh and Guddu thermal plants and Tarbela hydro-plant, besides funding the completion of Gomal Zam and Satpara dams.

More than 1000MW have been collectively added by the projects to Pakistan’s electrical grid.
