Additionally, the company has added 2.5 million gallons of new terminal storage and together these upgrades total about $4.5m.

The event witnessed the first barge shipment of 420,000 gallons of biodiesel from the multi-feedstock, 60-million gallon annual capacity plant located by the Illinois River.

The barge opening represents the fourth major project completion by REG in the last three months. The other three projects include a multi-feedstock upgrade at Albert Lea, Minnesota biorefinery, the opening of the Mason City, Iowa biodiesel plant. At that event, REG announced a $20m multi-feedstock upgrade project for the facility.

REG president and CEO Daniel Oh said the barge facility at the company’s Seneca biorefinery enhances its lower-cost, efficient business model.

"Adding more barge capabilities to our network of biorefineries and terminals across the country gives REG another capability for providing high quality biodiesel to our existing and future customers," added Oh.

"These moves show the strength of REG’s commitment to remaining a leader in the biodiesel industry and our ability to remain well-positioned to succeed in an evolving biodiesel marketplace."
