Located in Eastern Ontario between the towns of Westport and Newboro, the plants featuring SunEdison Silvantis 320W modules and Unirac fixed-tilt racks are likely to qualify for the province’s feed-in-tariff (FIT) program.

Once operational in 2014, the plants will generate enough electricity to power around 4,000 average homes in the province.

The Newboro plants will sell their output to the Ontario Power Authority under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

The plants, each of which creates more than 250 skilled workers on site at the peak of construction activity, bring the company’s Ontario solar FIT construction portfolio to 70MW.

Additionally, the plants are the fourth and fifth projects RES Canada has built for SunEdison, while the initial projects include 30MW Webberville Solar facility in Texas, and the SunE Rutley and Norfolk solar projects of 10MW each in Ontario.

RES Canada vice president of development Peter Clibbon said the company will be constructing these solar projects for SunEdison.

"Ontario’s commitment to renewable energy has already generated significant economic and job creation benefits, and these projects will continue that trend," added Clibbon.
