The Sumitomo-owned facility, which will be RES’ sixth utility-scale energy storage project.

The 6MW will feature three containers of Toshiba-manufactured lithium ion batteries and three inverter units built by Parker Hannifin.

Sumitomo has acquired an interest in Willey from RES, through its US subsidiary Perennial Power Holdings.

Construction of the project will commence this month and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Toshiba will deliver battery power storage system, auxiliary machinery will be supplied and installed by RES, and monitoring, dispatch and control of the system will be handled by the RESolve energy storage platform.

RES Americas energy storage vice-president Victor Babbitt said: "We look forward to using energy storage to help utilities and customers meet the challenges of the changing electrical grid in a cost-effective manner."

Sumitomo Corporation of Americas Power and Infrastucture Group director Nick Hagiwara said: "Sumitomo plans to expand beyond the PJM frequency regulation market with entry into potential marketplaces such as Texas and California.
