Data scientists at the centre will work on predictive mathematics, machine learning and advanced modelling, to identify problems before they occur thereby reducing maintenance costs and production losses for the company.

Rio Tinto group executive technology and innovation Greg Lilleyman said "The Analytics Excellence Centre will allow us to extract maximum value from the data we are capturing around the performance of our equipment, making our operations more predictable, efficient and safer.

"This is a world-first for the mining industry and is all part of Rio Tinto’s relentless pursuit of productivity gains across our businesses.

Huge volumes of data collected by sensors equipped on the company’s fixed and mobile equipment will be analyzed, to predict and prevent downtime events and boost productivity and safety.

Using advanced data analytic techniques, the company will be able to evaluate performance of its equipment, which will facilitate efficient, smarter and safer mining operations.

Developed in partnership with IGATE, the analytics excellence center is part of Rio Tinto’s Mine of the Future program, which aims to improve safety and productivity.
