UK energy minister Brian Wilson has committed £1.67 million of government funding to a £2.7 million project to build the world’s first floating power station powered by wave energy.

Completion of the project is expected to give a boost to the development of a new industry around the construction of off-shore wave powered generating stations.

Green power company Wavegen will construct the 2MW station, at a new marine energy testing centre in Orkney, Scotland, and bring it on line next summer.
