Medvedev arrived in Helsinki, Finland, on April 20, 2009 for a two-day state visit. He conducted bilateral talks with Finnish President Tarja Halonen, featuring the planned undersea gas pipeline from Russia to Germany.

Speaking at a joint press conference after talks with Halonen, Medvedev said, We consider the Nord Stream project useful for certain countries, Europe as a whole and we intend to promote it.

Halonen said that Finland had nothing against the gas pipeline provided environmental conditions were met.

Medvedev was pleased with Finland’s approach to Nord Stream pipeline project and assured that environmental concerns were being taken into consideration. He added that the pipeline would perk up Europe’s energy security.
