Built at a cost $300m, the power plant at Rusumo Falls on the border between Tanzania and Rwanda will also serve Burundi.

The Rusumo project manager Abdulla Kabirudin was reported by allafrica as saying that consultants are exploring the most environmental friendly strategy on the dam construction.

"Initially, the plant was planned to produce 90MW as the intermediate option, with a high environmental impact which would as well require resettling 9100 households," added Kabirudin.

The project is considered to be vital for Burundi’s socio-economical development and transmission lines will connect the power generation plant to Gitega in Burundi, Kigali in Rwanda and Nyakanazi in Tanzania.

Preparations for the implementation of the project are already on final stages and are scheduled to be operational by early next year.

The project is to be publicly financed, owned, and privately managed with respect to the border interests of the three countries.
