The project is a high-pressure run-of-river power plant with a 200m head and features a 660m long pressure pipe besides a power house with a Pelton turbine.

Costing €3m to construct the power plant is located close to RWE’s other hydroelectric power plants in the wet mountainous of northern Portugal.

RWE asset management international hydropower division head Hendrik Eden remarked that the company concluded the plant’s construction within 18 months and it was on schedule.

"This is already the sixth hydroelectric power plant commissioned by RWE Innogy in Portugal," added Eden.

Comprising 2MW of installed capacity, the plant can produce around 5,300MWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power 1,500 homes.

The company is expected to further expand its hydropower portfolio in Portugal beginning with a 3.6MW hydroelectric power plant scheduled to start construction in 2013, the company said.
