RWE has said that, together with the company, the aim is to build the first commercial plant in the Netherlands for producing biocoal pellets. The plant is planned to be realized in 2009.

Biocoal pellets reportedly have a high energy density as well as significantly improved product properties and can be co-fired together with coal in conventional power plants.

Fritz Vahrenholt, CEO of RWE Innogy, said: With our venture engagement with Topell, we have secured access at a very early stage to a technology that effectively reduces CO2 emissions in conventional power plants and the associated financial burdens. Once a successful test run of the first commercial plant has been completed, we therefore plan to expand production to a higher degree.
