RWE npower has received approval from the British energy ministry for a new 2,000MW, combined cycle gas turbine power station near Pembroke, UK.

The company has said that the works will commence shortly and up to 2,000 people are likely to be employed during peak construction. The new power station will create over 100 operational jobs and is expected to provide an ongoing investment of more than GBP10 million per year into the local economy.

According to RWE npower, it has identified two apprentices from the area for the project who are currently undergoing training at Bridgend College and Aberthaw power station in South Wales.

Andrew Duff, CEO of RWE npower, said: “The UK government’s consent for Pembroke power station represents an important step to ensuring the delivery of clean energy supplies while providing a boost to the economy.

Earlier in this week, npower announced that it has acquired one of Britain’s largest building services companies – SPI Group Ltd. The purchase, which was completed on 30 January, 2008, is a major boost for npower as it seeks to grow its energy services business. SPI specialises in providing mechanical and electrical installation and maintenance services, predominantly to social housing and public buildings.
